Centralina Area Agency on Aging, together with several local organizations including the Lesbian and Gay Community Center, hosted a two day Gay and Gray event in late April of 2009. Featuring guest speakers from the Lesbian Health Initiative and The Rainbow center in Atlanta, and our own Pamela Jones, and a panel of “experts” including Connie Vetter, participants were able to:
• increase their awareness and understanding of the unique needs of the GLBT senior
• outline strategies for creating an inclusive experience at their organization and
• identify local resources who can answer questions about legal, financial, healthcare, housing , care giving , end of life and other aging issues

Overwhelmingly, participants wanted the effort to address these issues to continue. Since then, The Gay and Lesbian Community Center and Centralina host a discussion of the Gay and Gray issues for Charlotte once a month on the second Tuesday from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at the Community Center. This informal session will look at the evaluations from the two-day workshop and consider how to continue offering education, support and advocacy to those in the community who are GAY AND GRAY OR HEADING THAT WAY!
